John questions Diabetes UK about Roadshow at Cray's Hill traveller site
24 September 2009
Diabetes UK is currently planning to host its Diabetes UK ‘Measure Up’ Roadshow for the Billericay area at the Crays Hill traveller site on 17-18 November. John Baron MP’s office has spoken with the charity to suggest a different location, but in the absence of any progress John has now written to the Chief Executive.
John said:
“Holding a Health Roadshow in the middle of this traveller site is not a good idea. I have explained to Diabetes UK that approximately half the site has been developed illegally and that, if the travellers do no move off, the Council will rightly be conducting a forced eviction.
“Given the importance of the Roadshow’s message, we should be aiming to get as many people along as possible. But this will not happen because the traveller site is a contentious location. It would therefore be wise to relocate.
“Diabetes UK does an excellent job in helping the 2.5 million people with Diabetes in the UK, and its message that a large waistline may increase the risk of developing the condition by up to 12 times is important. It therefore must relocate and I have offered to help find an alternative venue.”
